I normally start each review with the "official" background description from the particular brands website or from one of the retailer websites, as most of them use the same description anyhow. The difference being, I actually quote the source to give credit where credit is due. Dusting Off The Golf Clubs
Posted on March 20th, 2010 by Kurt Wolaver

After a false start about a month ago, spring has finally kicked off here in Germany! This week, it went from near freezing temperatures to temperatures in the 60's. I actually saw flowers blooming alongside the road. I had the afternoon off, so I decided to do something I hadn't done in about a year...I went to the driving range. With working major overtime last year, studying for my degree, and working on this website, I didn't have much time for much else. On a side note, I found out today that I passed all of my exams and I am now a college graduate! I'm pretty excited about that.

Feeling pretty good, I made my way to the basement to dust off the golf clubs (literally) and load them in the car. I drove the whole way there, the window down, breeze blowing through my hairs (not a typo, I'm bald). Along the way I was weaving around bicyclists on the road, watched people sitting outside cafes as they watched me pass by, and smelled the freshly fertilized tobacco and asparagus fields our area is known for. Out of habit, I wore my warm leather jacket, only to remove it shortly after breaking a sweat from the "heat wave" outside. It was going to be a good afternoon. (read more...)

"The 'Edición Limitadas', whose filler, binder, and wrapper leafs have been cured for a minimum of two years, have been in the market since 2000. Every year aficionados are anxiously waiting for them, and they continue being extremely popular. Every year, certain formats are selected for the limited production, which are not part of the brands' standard portfolio. They also stand out through their naturally fermented dark wrapper leafs. They are made from tobacco leafs from the upper part of the plants." (read more...)

Cognac
Posted on February 11th, 2009 by Kurt Wolaver

The clear brandy known as "eau-de-vie" (or aqua vitae, meaning "water of life") began export from the Cognac region of France in the late 1500's. We know "eau-de-vie" more commonly today as Cognac. Cognac is basically distilled wine aged for a time in oak barrels at first then later on into older barrels for years. By law, it can be sold thirty months after distillation, but a good quality Cognac will take several years to age.

Cognac came from salt. But limestone forms the foundation of Cognac. Or more clearly stated: (read more...)

Top 5 Cigars of 2009
Posted on December 31st, 2009 by Kurt Wolaver

From time to time people ask me which cigar I enjoy the most. It is a tough question because I enjoy so many different cigars. It really depends on my mood at the time. But for this article I decided to compile a list of my top 5 favorite cigars of 2009. At times I come by really great cigars that are either way too expensive (Cohiba Siglo VI GR) or too hard to come by (Arturo Fuente OpusX). I consider these special treats to enjoy for the moment. But the list I compiled has the cigars I would most likely smoke on a regular rotation. Here they are: (read more...)

Women In Lounges
Posted on November 21st, 2009 by Kurt Wolaver

Women in a cigar lounge is an interesting dynamic. The question stands...do women belong in a cigar lounge? A century ago the answer would be clear and direct...NO! At that time societies norms and mores were quite different than what they are today and a woman would have thought twice about crossing this gender barrier. You would think that times have changed since then? They have changed...haven't they? Cigars are predominately a man’s world even today. It is however no secret that woman today are emerging as an increasing market in the cigar industry. Almost 30 years ago, women purchased one tenth of one percent of cigars. Today women are buying two percent of cigars sold on the market. That may seem like small numbers, but it is actually a 3,000 percent increase!

A century ago smoking premium cigars showed a status of power. Premium cigars were expensive, ergo smoking one meant you were successful in business or it showed your wealth or affluence. Successful business women a century ago were rare, ergo no cigar toting women. We all smoke cigars for our own reasons. Some like the taste, some like the aroma, some still see it as a status symbol, and some enjoy the camaraderie smoking cigars brings out in people. These reasons are true for both men and women. But how quickly are women accepted into the circle at a cigar lounge? I ask this question after my recent journey into cigar lounges in the United States. (read more...)

This time the whole Wolly Clan drove out to Gettysburg on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Along the way we were reminded of PA's German heritage driving through such towns as East Berlin and by the Hofbrauhaus in Abbottstown. We also noticed a myriad of houses with the Amish Barn Stars adorning the outside of their homes. Instead of going directly to the Union Cigar Club in downtown Gettysburg, we decided to first tour some of the many battlefield monuments. Gettysburg has changed since I was a kid. Olde World Tobacco in Lancaster, PA

It was a pleasure to visit this cigar lounge in the Heart of Lancaster County and Amish Country. After an afternoon of visiting many, many shops in such towns as Intercourse, Blue Ball, and Bird In Hand (Yes, those really are their names) with my sisters and girlfriend, we stopped at Olde World Tobacco. I was encouraged that Olde World Tobacco boasted a kick-ass coffee bar as well as cigar lounge. I needed some kind of carrot to dangle in front of the ladies after the previous day’s debacle in Hershey. If this place wasn't good, I'd never live my cigar hobby down. If I could show them "my world" hopefully they would understand their brothers hobby (passion really) a little better. With my (read more...)

I stopped by a total of four cigar lounges during my visit to Central PA. I'll do a full review of two of them shortly. As for the other two, I want to give an honorable mention to one and a WTF! to another. Let me explain...

J. Thomas O'Malley Tobacconist

The very first cigar lounge was visited before we even reached our final destination. We reached Central PA a couple hours earlier than expected. As we were staying with family, nobody was home because we were expected later. What's a great way to pass some time? You guessed it, after an eight and a half hour flight and three and a half hours in a car, we decided to give J. Thomas O'Malley Tobacconist (I love the name) a try. It is actually connected to the pool room of Coakley's Restaurant and Irish Pub. located at 305 Bridge Street, New Cumberland, PA 17070. It is also accessible through a very cool, old, speakeasy style front door on Bridge Street. It boasts a beautiful hand-crafted wooden bar with a nice selection of high end whiskies, cognacs, and brandy and also cocktails, wine and beer. There is a humidor cabinet standing next to the bar containing a small but well selected choice of cigars such as Padrón, Arturo Fuente, Oliva, and Rocky Patel. The staff was friendly and very helpful with any questions or assistance we required.

We purchased our cigars and settled into some comfortable chairs at the end of the room with our beers. I enjoyed a spicy Padrón Robusto Maduro ($5) and my smoking partner-in-crime enjoyed an Oliva G Special G ($4). We passed the time catching up on American football on the large flat screen TV in front of us, enjoying a Yuengling beer after a long hiatus, enjoying each other’s company and the atmosphere smoking our cigars.

     J. Thomas O'Malley Tobacconist recently opened in September of this year. It is (read more...)

Cigarrum in Frankfurt, Germany

This time around, myself and friends of KCL made a nice evening out on the town with a nice steak dinner including good cigars and drinks afterwards. The men dressed in sharp tailored suits and the ladies looked lovely as ever. They made us guys look about 10 times more handsome and important just by being together with us. I do enjoy putting a nice suit on, spending time with people close to me while enjoying the finer things in life. This evening did not dissapoint. (read more...)

La Casa Cubana - Singapore

It just felt right as we walked into La Casa Cubana. It had an old world charm to it the way cigar stores are supposed to be...in my opinion at least. It was a good sized square room with the walls filled with shelves filled with humidors. In the midddle of the room was also a table with more humidors filled with cigars. It had a very rustic feel with alot of wood and carpeting. There was a second room also, which I lost my friend to, as it had more humidor filled shelves but also a shelf case filled with Macallan scotch whiskey only (read more...)

The Olde Cuban - Chinatown, Singapore

The Olde Cuban is conveniently located right by the Chinatown MRT (subway) stop on the North East line. It is located right in the heart of Chinatown in a 19th century building formally an opium den for coolie traders. Today you'll walk right by it if you don't look up. There are so many shops along the street on the way to The Olde Cuban with hookers (not the sex worker types) trying to pull (or "hook") you into their shop to buy something. I actually walked by The Olde Cuban twice. I didn't notice it until I looked out the 3rd floor window of the Chinatown Heritage Centre and noticed the sign for The Olde Cuban on the building directly (read more...)

From Homebrewing to Microbreweries in America
Posted on July 25th, 2009 by Kurt Wolaver

I wrote the following article back in 1993 for my college English 101 class. Yes, a brief return to the days before internet was a popular medium to express your ideas. I was cleaning my basement recently and came across this article typed on paper with an old relic called a typewriter. I found it relative enough to include on this website. It is informative and offers an insight into beer and home brewing and its history as it relates to America. Here it is...

Regionally brewed beers will, in time, become as popular in the United States as they are now in Europe.

The 21st Amendment brought smiles and beer to many Americans. But it also mistakenly brought a long void of quality beer in America.

Louixs Rosados
Posted on July 16th, 2009 by Kurt Wolaver

"Louixs Rosados by Goldwin Tobacco
These hand-rolled cigars are priced at $50 a pop."

In the words of Tennis legend, John McEnroe..."You can NOT be serious!!" As a daily cigar smoker, I give more consideration to the price of a cigar. Even though I have some expensive cigars in my humidor which I bring out to smoke from time to time, I have many affordable cigars I smoke for my neccessary daily ration. But this article reminds me of the Pulp Fiction scene about a $5 milkshake:

VINCENT:Did you just order a five-dollar shake?
MIA: Sure did.
VINCENT: A shake? Milk and ice cream?
MIA: Uh-huh.

Habanos Day 2009
Posted on June 23rd, 2009 by Kurt Wolaver

Habanos Day 2009 was quite the experience. After an uneventful 2 hour drive, we arrived early in the rather quiet and dead little town of Unsleben in Bavaria. We found the event, parked the car and looked for an outside cafe to sit and enjoy a coffee and a starter cigar (Sancho Panza Non Plus) before the event kicked off. After walking about the "town" we had no luck. We did find a small bakery with two tables inside and a friendly staff. We had our coffee and cake and left with 30 minutes until they started allowing people into the event. I lit my Sancho Panza and we liesurely meandered in the direction of the castle, killing time until they were ready to start the event. (read more...)

Totalmente a Mano
Posted on June 13th, 2009 by Kurt Wolaver

I sit here enjoying a beautiful freshly rolled Cohiba Siglo VI which I acquired yesterday while attending a live cigar rolling display by Señor Lazaro Alberto Garzia, "Jefe de Galera" of the El Liguito Cigar Factory in Cuba. He is here in Germany doing a few live cigar rolling displays at select venues before appearing at "Habanos Tag 2009" in Unsleben, Germany. I was fortunate enough to attend a disply he did at Magne Falkum Tabak store in their Keller.

I must admit Magne Falkum, a family run Tobacconist since 1948, is my favorite Tobacconist this side of the Atlantic. Every time I enter the store, (read more...)
