Worldwide Cigar Lounges

We all want and need to pamper ourselves man-style. That means finding a nice cigar lounge to relax in without someone complaining about the cigar smoke. Some cigar lounges are nicer than others but we all have our own personal tastes and opinions about what that perfect cigar lounge is. The fun is trying to find that perfect one. Not an easy task, but one I'm willing to undertake for the sake of my sanity.

Weinromantikhotel Richtershof in Mülheim/Mosel,
Germany

How to get there:

Option 1. I followed my GPS to this destination. Along the way, I noticed I was following the same way to reach Frankfurt-Hahn Airport. This cigar lounge is located between Frankfurt-Hahn Airport and Trier. Coming from Frankfurt am Main or Mannheim areas find your way to the A61 direction Koblenz and exit at Exit 45 Rheinbollen. Follow the B50 in the direction Trier/Simmern/Bacharach/Rhein for 36 kilometers. You'll drive a few kilometers past the Frankfurt-Hahn Airport exit and turn left on Hunsrückhöhenstrasse and follow the signs to Mülheim/Mosel. After a scenic 25 kilometer drive you will reach your destination.

If you are coming from Saarland or Kaiserslautern follow the A1 direction Trier, hook a right at Trier on the A48 direction Koblenz, then take the Salmtal exit. Follow the signs to Mülheim. The town of Mülheim is only approximately a 30 minute drive from the Luxembourg border.

Option 2. If traveling by train, you can arrive in the nearby town of Wittlich (12 km away) and travel by bus or taxi to Mülheim.

Davidoff Lounge Mülheim/Mosel

The Davidoff Lounge is located above the Bistro Bar "Remise" located inside the Weinromantikhotel Richtershof. To not discuss the Weinromantikhotel Richtershof would be folly, as the superior quality (so sayith the 4 stars on the front door) of the hotel compliments the cigar lounge experience. The hotel is located on the Mosel river in the middle of picturesque wine country. And the hotel is a pseudo-oasis in this wine country. The hotel boasts a gourmet-restaurant "Culinarium R", another restaurant "Wintergarten Baldachin" (breakfast & dinner), a Day Spa "Beauty Atelier" for several variations of massages and peelings, a Roman Spa (free use for guests of the hotel) including several relaxing highlights such as steam baths, sauna, whirlpool, or relax in your robe on beach deck chairs. The grotto shower is pretty cool. Try the rainforest option and enjoy the birds. The hotel also boasts "parks" or small outside sitting area cafe style to enjoy during pleasant weather. You can also enjoy the "Afternoon Tea" experience. The building itself dates back to the 1800's and each room is decorated differently in a unique theme.

They also boast a wine tour and tasting in their wine cellar. Be careful about this one. They call it "Forum Vinum". By looking at the website you get the impression that the wine cellar is located on premise. The pictures of the wine cellar are beautiful! But during this time of the year, the "Forum Vinum" tasting and tour takes place in a very modern store front about a 200 meter walk away from the hotel. It lasts about one hour and consists of tasting wine one after the other with no tour of the beautiful wine cellar they display on their web site. Even though we really enjoyed the wine (bought a few bottles of wine the next day) we were quite disappointed not touring the wine cellar. It turns out the wine cellar is located out in the vineyard. They organize tours when the weather gets nicer.

This is after all a cigar lounge review so i will give my opinion of the Davidoff Cigar Lounge. The Davidoff Cigar Lounge is essentially the second floor of the Bistro Bar "Remise". The cigar lounge is just as nice (if not better) as the pictures in this review show it to be. The hotel is smoke-free except for this lounge. The lounge is built for and designed for the cigar smoker. But the cigarette smokers from the downstairs will drop by for a quick smoke. With the anti-smoking laws becoming more stringent, this trend of cigarette smokers dropping by to smoke will be more commonplace in the near future. That's only my opinion.

The lounge is a rustic, open farmhouse style with a very comforting, relaxing atmosphere. You're met at the top of the stairs with a cigar cabinet humidor stocked with a selection of Davidoff, Zino, and The Griffin's cigars. As you venture in, you notice immediately the wooden floors with wooden beams propping the ceiling. There are leather chairs/couches spread about and the room is decorated with antiques and antique furniture. There is a good selection of cigar magazines and books to read while enjoying your smoke and/or drink. We also enjoyed the rhythmic jazz/big band music playing at a reasonable tone in the background.

Davidoff Lounge Mülheim/Mosel

I need to backtrack for a moment. To understand my full experience you need to know what I did leading up to my cigar lounge visit. Upon arrival at the hotel, I enjoyed a relaxing back message, sat in the sauna, showered in the grotto, enjoyed an hour-long wine tasting (although not in the wine cellar...argh!), and moved on to a gourmet 3 course French meal. Then I walked into this wonderful cigar lounge to top off the evening. The lounge did not disappoint. I purchased a Davidoff Short Perfecto for my smoking partner for the next hour. I brought from home a Cohiba Siglo VI cigar rolled for me last summer by Señor Garzia to pass the hour.

For drinks, we started with an espresso each and I moved on to a lovely Shiraz which complimented my cigar quite nicely. The lounge boasts a "large selection of Whiskys and Whiskeys, fine Cognacs", wines, cocktails, coffee/espresso, and teas. You can also order food downstairs from "Remise". The cigar menu also offers monthly whisky and cigar pairing suggestions.

Service was optimal...friendly and professional. Even though our pictures show an empty lounge, it did fill up within minutes after taking the pictures. The wait staff was often nearby checking on patrons making sure we were taken care of.

Prices: Fair. I found them to be the average prices for cigar lounges I've visited in Germany. And they don't skimp on the drink portions. The hotel is also not as expensive as one would think for the services they provide. They also run some good deals for a more enjoyable stay. Check their website for these deals.

Recommendation: If you live near this cigar lounge, I'm sure you know about it already, visit it quite often, and you're wondering why it took so long for someone to write a review about it. I loved it there. If you do not live nearby like myself, I would recommend staying the night at the hotel (alone or with your significant other) and treating yourself (and/or significant other) to a wellness evening at the spa and gourmet restaurant before hitting the cigar lounge. Located in a beautiful wine region, the Rheinland-Pfalz, I'm sure there is more to do and see in the summer.

Davidoff Lounge Baden-Baden

How to get there:

This one requires a car to get to. You can take a train to Baden-Baden, and then catch a cab to the address given above. Or if you are driving, use the GPS or get the directions off of an internet site such as Google Maps or Falk. The Hotel Zum Hirsch is located approximately 300 meters away from the Neues Schloss (New Castle). You can look for parking by the hotel or park up by the castle and take a nice leisurely stroll down the street to the Hotel.

We started the evening out at dinner at a very nice French restaurant called La Provence. Great atmosphere and delicious food. I felt adventurous and actually tried something I thought I would NEVER try...snails. They were prepared in a garlic butter but the snails themselves have no taste. They were pretty good. The only downside to the restaurant is it definitely serves French portions. Knowing that, go and enjoy a nice dinner at La Provence.

Davidoff Lounge Baden-Baden

We left the restaurant located next to the Neues Schloss and walked a few hundred meters through town to Hotel Zum Hirsch to enjoy a cigar at the Davidoff Lounge located on the second floor (1st floor German). It is one room made into a lounge. It is the only room in the building where one can smoke. There are plenty of comfortable couches and chairs to relax in. Although the chairs are fine quality, they are a bit tight for bigger guys like me. I settled into a couch to relax. The room is comfortable and has an elegance about it. It had one cabinet humidor stocked with Davidoff brand cigars. There is also a bookshelves filled with books for your reading pleasure. It was a bit after 9 P.M. and the humidor was locked. So I went downstairs and asked reception if I could get a cigar from the humidor. She made a phone call, informed me it would be a minute. I ordered some wine and went back upstairs. About 10 minutes later the receptionist showed up with two good sized proportioned glasses of wine. She informed us the boss had unfortunately left earlier with the keys and wouldn't be returning for the evening. I luckily brought a cigar with me from home. After asking the receptionist, she kindly permitted a "non-Davidoff" cigar to be smoked in the Davidoff Lounge. I lit up a Bolivar Royal Corona, sat back and enjoyed the atmosphere, my wine, my cigar, and time well spent with my girlfriend. We stayed at the lounge undisturbed until 11 P.M.

There is a bar and restaurant across the hall from the cigar lounge. They were closed while we were there. The website shows they are open in the afternoon. This is not a full service cigar lounge, but it is a place available to cigar smokers to enjoy a cigar in an elegant setting.

Prices: I can't comment on the price of the cigars, because I didn't purchase any cigars at Davidoff Lounge. There was also no cigar menu to check prices. I did pay a fair price of €10 for two glasses (with rather good portions) of wine.

Recommendation: If you are in or nearby Baden-Baden for any reason and have time to "enjoy" a cigar, then go to the Davidoff Lounge. Keep in mind...go there if you want to enjoy a cigar in an elegant setting WITHOUT expecting to be waited on hand and foot. You will have to go to reception to ask for assistance. But the staff at Hotel Zum Hirsch are very helpful and courteous and will deliver drinks to the lounge. And do bring your own cigar, cutter and lighter in case the manager goes home with the keys to the humidor. If the keys to the humidor are there, then by all means enjoy one of the Davidoff’s vitolas in the Davidoff Lounge.

Cigarrum - Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof in Frankfurt am Main

How to get there:

Whether you take a train or drive your car to Frankfurt... you should get off at or park your car in a Parkhaus by the Hauptwache U-bahn stop. It is a 5 minute walk from there to the Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof. Walk toward the main entrance of this beautiful 5-Star hotel and you will see a small sign posted directing you to turn right toward Cigarrum. Follow it. Go through the door and directly up the wide carpeted staircase and you'll walk right into Cigarrum on the second floor.

Cigarrum - Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof in Frankfurt am Main

This time around, myself and friends of KCL made a nice evening out on the town with a nice steak dinner including good cigars and drinks afterwards. The men dressed in sharp tailored suits and the ladies looked lovely as ever. They made us guys look about 10 times more handsome and important just by being together with us. I do enjoy putting a nice suit on, spending time with people close to me while enjoying the finer things in life. This evening did not disappoint.

Even though this is a Cigar Lounge Review I will take a moment to talk about the restaurant where we all enjoyed a nice steak dinner. "Buena Vista" located in downtown Frankfurt has a Latin American/Spanish kitchen with a South American ambiance and some nice wines. Everything is reasonably priced. You can enjoy tapas and fajitas also, but don't pass up a chance for a well prepared steak. Anyone living in Germany will tell you that finding a well cooked steak is not a simple task here. So consider this restaurant if you're in Frankfurt for some reason and you get a hankering for a good steak....... Off to the cigar lounge we go *grins*.

With a content belly and a beautiful woman by my side we headed off by foot a short distance to Cigarrum. Quite surprisingly at nine o'clock on a Saturday evening there were no guests in the place. A friendly hostess extended a warm greeting and offered us our obvious choice of seating. Forgoing the large Bar area (complete with grand piano) we ventured onward settling into the cozy Kaminzimmer or the room with a fireplace.

Before ordering our drinks small bowls of peanuts, pistachios and wasabi were placed in front of us as well as long skinny trays of thin dark-, milk- and vanilla-chocolate wafers. They were all good but I kept eating the vanilla flavored chocolate throughout or stay...delicious! With drinks ordered I explored the lounge a bit. They have 2 cigar cabinets about my height and width. One has Cuban Cigars with a selection of the big names (R & J, Montechristo, Partagas, etc... but with limited vitolas) and the other has predominately Davidoff with a vitola of The Griffin's and another brand that escapes me. I returned to the ladies already enjoying their drinks. We ordered our cigars choice, the hostess delivered and prepared them. Cigar lit, drink in hand... we sat back and enjoyed.

The room itself was quite comfortable and elegant. The fireplace symbolized a reality check to my denial...yes, winter is around the corner (grrr). On the other hand a fireplace always brings me a calming, relaxing feeling. Nice touch. Shortly after we settled into our new surroundings other guests began to arrive at Cigarrum. I guess we were just the early bird. We did have a "not normally a fan of the cigar smoke aroma" in our group. However she did comment that the smoke was not bothering her and the aroma was actually quite nice. That is a compliment to Cigarrums excellent ventilation system. If it is Rum that you enjoy, this is DEFINATELY the place for you. Cigarrum boasts a very large selection of Rum and they deliver on that statement. Other than lying on a hot Caribbean beach pondering which rum to try, Cigarrum is a rum lover’s wet dream. "Cigars, Rum & Chocolates" are their hallmark. They have great premium cigars, a huge selection of quality rums and mouth-watering chocolates in a comfortably elegant setting. And yes, the really old looking books on the bookshelves are real and they are really old. I can't help being nosy sometimes *shrugs*. I set out in the beginning of the evening wanting to enjoy the good life for an evening. Mission accomplished.

Prices: The cigars are reasonable with a slight markup comparable to other lounges in Germany. The markup on the drinks were double what we paid earlier in the evening at dinner. But I expected that considering the look and feel of the cigar lounge itself. Again it's the atmosphere you're paying for.

Cigarrum - Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof in Frankfurt am Main

Recommendation: This is a great place to bring the significant other... as long as they are tolerant of cigars of course. Dress nice, relax, enjoy a wine in a very large manly wine glass (as they should be), also rums and whiskies of course, smoke premium cigars with other keepers of the good life mantra, munch on the delicious vanilla flavored chocolates, and be entertained by the company of good friends. Treat yourselves people. You only live once.

La Casa del Habanos - Frankfurt am Main

Since the opening of the first "La Casa del Habanos" in Cancun, Mexico in 1990, they have today expanded to over 130 franchises worldwide. The "La Casa del Habanos" is a franchise brand of Habanos S.A. based in Havana, Cuba. The downtown Frankfurt am Main location opened in January 2009, making it the fifth in Germany.

How to get there:

It is located directly on the border of the banking district and the red-light district. There are a few options of how to reach the cigar lounge:

Option 1. From the Frankfurt Hbf (Main train station) walk straight out the doors of McDonalds through the parking lot and straight down the street into the red-light district. Pass by the random dealer asking if you want to buy "H" and of course the many strip clubs, sex shops, and bordellos. After two blocks of interesting urban scenery you will walk across a street and step into the banking district and La Casa del Habanos will be directly on your left.

Option 2. Follow your navigation system and you can park in a nearby parking garage or park directly in front of La Casa del Habanos. Parking is free after 1700 in front of the shop. No matter which route you take to get there, it is worth it.

La Casa del Habanos - Frankfurt am Main VIP Lounge

I decided to go in the early afternoon to avoid a large crowd of people. I could get more attention from the staff (to make myself feel pampered...a cigar lounge is after all the male equivalent of ladies day at the beautician) and take time to ask questions without feeling like I am holding them up from caring for other customers. I walked in and it just felt right to me. There was one customer sitting at the bar and two smartly dressed gentlemen sitting in the cigar lounge enjoying a cigar and drink. The whole of the inside has a mix of old world charm and a 'modern' English gentleman club. Another wards, they tried to give it an "old" look but all of the building material and furniture are brand new. It did give me a warm comfortable feeling. But also a feeling they are trying to attract a higher class of clientele...meaning people with lots of money.

Attired in a collared, button-down shirt, no tie, a casual custom tailored blazer, jeans, and leather shoes I felt confident and decided to venture in and see how the staff reacted to my presence. From initial contact on, I found them to be very polite, relaxed and professional. The boss Señor Rigoberto Reyes was very helpful. He escorted me into their 30 m2 walk-in humidor stocked exclusively with Habanos cigars. It also has 36 private acclimatized humidor cabinet’s available for rent. Cigars stored in these cabinets must be purchased in-house. This is required to prevent infection of the dreaded tobacco beetle from outside sources. I was pleased with the large selection and also pleased to see that the prices were not higher than the status quo in Germany. He had an espresso delivered to the humidor as I pondered which lucky cigar I would spend my next hour with. I choose an H. Upmann Connoisseur No. 1.

Señor Reyes directed me to the smoking lounge and excused himself momentarily while he prepared my cigar and arranged another espresso. I choose one of the large, comfortable, leather chairs out of many scattered about the spacious room. The two smartly dressed gentlemen nearby acknowledged me with a friendly nod and returned to their conversation. Cuban music played softly in the background. Señor Reyes entered the smoking lounge with the head already cut off my cigar and a waitress followed with a fresh espresso. He warmed the foot with a long cedar match for quite some time, handed me the cigar and offered the remaining flame to light my cigar. Noticing I was quite satisfied with my initial waft of Cuban delight, Señor Reyes wished me a pleasant stay and retreated to the bar in the other room. I pulled out the latest edition of Cigar Clan which I purchased at the train station book shop, settled back in my chair and began to read.

The wait staff was attentive making themselves present about every ten minutes but not disturbing me unless of course I needed something. After finishing my second espresso, I ordered a rum and coke. They brought the rum in a very large brandy snifter with a small glass bottle of coke on the side. This complimented the cigar quite well. For the next hour I entertained myself reading some interesting articles, enjoying a wonderful cigar, and enjoying the overall atmosphere of "La Casa del Habanos".

"La Casa del Habanos Frankfurt" does have a Non-Smoking Lounge, a VIP lounge for hosting special events, a live cigar roller "Torcedor", and an outside patio around the back in a courtyard setting open during warmer months. They also have a large selection of wines and cocktails. If you get hungry, you can order tapas or sandwiches from their kitchen.

La Casa del Habanos - Frankfurt am Main Outdoor Patio

Prices: The cigars are fair and comparable to other shops in Germany. The extra Euro for the espresso I expected. But a rum and coke costing €11, I didn't expect. The drinks are quite pricey. It's the atmosphere you're paying for.

Recommendation: Do you have a lot of money and want to spend that money on an evening of fine wine, champagne, and overpriced (although tasty) cocktails in a very elegant, relaxed setting? Then this is a great place do it. But it is also a great place to treat yourself to an hour in the afternoon with a good cigar and a rum or coffee in an elegant and relaxed setting. Considering it's location, it would also be a great place to start the evening with the guys, before hitting the town. It's not an everyday place to settle in and enjoy a cigar. But it is a place to treat yourself to from time to time.

**Post Script**: I visited La Casa del Habanos recently for a second time. This time I brought my camera and informed Señor Reyes I was doing a review of his cigar lounge for my website. Señor Reyes and his wait staff were most gracious and accommodating....exactly as they were the first time I visited without their knowledge I was reviewing their establishment. I felt this deserved mention.

**Post Post Script**: February 9, 2010... I've been informed that this cigar lounge went bankrupt last month. We'll notify you if another company takes over this cigar lounge or if the lounge goes away.

La Casa Cubana - Singapore

While the ladies were off shopping my friend and I decided to try out La Casa Cubana located in the Regent Hotel. Unfortunately I left the camera in the car with the ladies. So the pictures you see in this review are borrowed directly from the La Casa Cubana website. The Regent Hotel is located at the far end of the infamous Orchard Road.

If traveling by foot, exit from the North South line at the Orchard Road stop. When at street level go left and walk past the Royal Tai Embassy, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, several 7 11's, Hard Rock Cafe and past the Orchard Parade Hotel (the Oaks Cellars is located at the Orchard Parade...you'll walk right past it) where the street turns into Tanglin Road. Walk past the Tanglin Shopping Centre and turn left on Thomlinson Road. About 30 meters down on the right you'll see the Regent Hotel with La Casa Cubana located on the corner of the ground floor. The walk from Orchard Road MRT stop to the Regent hotel is only a 10-minute walk.

If traveling by car, park in one of the nearby hotel parking lots. Or, just take a cab there. Cabs are really inexpensive in Singapore.

La Casa Cubana - Singapore

It just felt right as we walked into La Casa Cubana. It had an old world charm to it the way cigar stores are supposed to be...in my opinion at least. It was a good-sized square room with the walls filled with shelves filled with humidors. In the middle of the room was also a table with more humidors filled with cigars. It had a very rustic feel with alot of wood and carpeting. There was a second room also, which I lost my friend to, as it had more humidor filled shelves but also a shelf case filled with Macallan scotch whiskey only. They had a large selection of cigars but I was only interested in finding Habanos Asia-Pacifico Regional cigars. They had one, which I hadn't tried so far during my trip, a 2009 Ramon Allones Celestiales Fino. I made my selection and we retired to the lounge to enjoy some well-deserved guy time.

The lounge is located "off-premise" and we received a proper welcome by the bartender, in our opinion. When asked what we'd like to drink, we each ordered a 12-year-old sherry wood Macallan scotch whisky. The bartender replied, "We only start at 18 year old, sir." My friend and I looked at each other, grinned from ear to ear and I thought to myself, "Oh yeah...this definitely the place for us". "Then 18 year old it shall be," we replied. We retired to beautiful dark green leather upholstered chairs. They had no local Tiger beer, so we chose a Cristal beer, which was just as good. This lounge was absolutely beautiful. I'm planning on building a cigar lounge in my home and I took away many great ideas from this lounge. This place smelled of money and power. There were high-powered bosses of international companies sitting next to us, businessmen and then there was little old me. I was treated with equal respect and courtesy. The staff was again very friendly and professional.

La Casa Cubana also boasts a large collection of rare and vintage cigars, "exclusive and rare humidors, the only Macallan vertical tasting in Asia, and a superb and exclusive selection of fine single malt whiskies". Also important to know is "the private smoking saloon is strictly La Casa Cubana's members priority and invited guests only."

There are a few other places to find cigars in Singapore. Some I was able to visit and others I weren't. For purchasing cigars only, try The Oaks Cellars at the Orchard Parade Hotel (also has a nice selection of wines...which are also expensive Singapore-wide) or Takashimaya Shopping Center, and Habanos in Suntec City Mall (have the younger lady help you, she is more knowledgeable about cigars). In these shops I found a 2006 Punch Super Robusto, a 2007 Por Larranaga Robusto, and a 2008 Bolivar Short. I will be doing reviews on all the Asia-Pacifico Regional cigars in the future. Places I'll try next year but let you know about incase you get there before I do are the Davidoff store located in the Grand Hyatt Hotel, The Connosieur Divan located on River Valley Road, and The Conno Divan on Mohammed Sultan Road (+65 6733 7141).

La Casa Cubana - Singapore

Prices: Again...cigars are not only expensive here but they are expensive everywhere in Singapore. I enjoyed a 2009 Ramon Allones Celestiales Fino Regional Asia-Pacifico which sells for S$35 or approximately €17. An 18 year old sherry wood Macallan scotch whisky will run you S$31 or approximately €15.

Recommendation: Again only accepting the fact that cigars are more expensive in Singapore before I went was I able to relax and enjoy myself while smoking one. This place is a must see while in Singapore! Even though it's pricey, put some money aside and treat yourself to a manly hour of whisky, cigars, great atmosphere and warm hospitality.

The Olde Cuban - Chinatown,
Singapore

The Olde Cuban is conveniently located right by the Chinatown MRT (subway) stop on the North East line. It is located right in the heart of Chinatown in a 19th century building formally an opium den for coolie traders. Today you'll walk right by it if you don't look up. There are so many shops along the street on the way to The Olde Cuban with hookers (not the sex worker types) trying to pull (or "hook") you into their shop to buy something. I actually walked by The Olde Cuban twice. I didn't notice it until I looked out the 3rd floor window of the Chinatown Heritage Centre and noticed the sign for The Olde Cuban on the building directly across from us. I got excited knowing I was so close to it, but I did ake my time and finished touring a pretty interesting museum. I would recommend this museum as it does a great job giving an honest explanation how the immigrants sacrificed and hardships they endured to make a better life for themselves and their families. We meandered slowly down to the museum exit and collected Alan at the small bar downstairs as he was finishing up his Tiger beer. I mentioned noticing the Lounge sign. He replied, "I know, that's our next stop."

The Olde Cuban - Singapore

We crossed the small street to our new destination and climbed the stairs to the second floor. Opening the lounge door and stepping through was like walking into another world. Until this point I was banished to smoking my cigars, sweating my ass off, on my hotel balcony at night before going to bed, as Singapore is relatively smoke-free. When the door closed behind us I no longer felt as if I was in Chinatown. I was now in an warm comforting Colonial-style cigar lounge. To my right a bar, to my left a shrine of assorted Macallan Scotch Whiskies, and straight ahead behind a wall of glass stood what's boasted as "the largest walk-in humidor in Singapore". I headed for the humidor with two attractive Sharply dressed ladies standing inside waiting to assist me. My friends sat patiently while I made my cigar selection.

Since I arrived in Singapore I was searching cigar shops for Habanos Asian-Pacifico Regional only. I made no exception at The Olde Cuban. Up until this visit I had been quite successful at acquiring Regional Editions. Unfortunately they had no Asian-Pacifico Regional Editions on-hand. So I "settled" for a Partagas Mille Fleurs and was moved to a room behind the humidor. I sank into a very plush, comfortable leather couch. My friends joined me from the other room and soon three 18-year-old sherry wood Macallan scotch whiskies and three Tiger beers were sitting in front of us.

The staff was very friendly and professional as one would expect in such an establishment. We spent the next hour talking about everything from what we had already done on our vacation to what we had in store for the next couple of days. The hour we spent there was first time we actually just sat down during the day and enjoyed one another’s companies. There is so much to see, do and buy in Singapore and we definitely took advantage of all these things until we sank into those comfortable leather coaches and relaxed and talked and laughed. There are a couple rooms to relax and enjoy your stay with a bar displaying a great variety of drink.

Prices: Here's the downside...cigars are not only expensive here but they are expensive everywhere in Singapore. A Partagas Mille Fleurs purchased at The Olde Cuban cost S$15. That is approximately equivalent to €7.35. The same cigar can be purchased in Germany for €4,20. The 18 year old sherry wood Macallan scotch whisky cost S$26 or approximately €12.75. There is nothing you can do about the high prices in Singapore. There is no ration of an allowable amount of cigars permitted into Singapore (that includes duty free). You must declare any and all cigars upon entry into Singapore. So if you want to enjoy cigars while you are in Singapore, you are stuck paying the high prices.

The Olde Cuban - Singapore

Recommendation: I did my research before going to Singapore and found that cigars cost much more than what the norm is here in Europe. Once you accept the fact that cigars are more expensive in Singapore only then will you be able to relax and enjoy yourself while smoking one. You won't find another place that sells them much cheaper. All cigar shops are about the same [expensive] price. Now, as for The Olde Cuban itself... go and enjoy yourself. The atmosphere alone is enjoyable. The staff is friendly, the cigar lounges themselves are comfortable and the scotch whisky selection is great. And most importantly it is air-conditioned so you won't have to sit and sweat while trying to enjoy yourself.

Union Cigar Club Gettysburg, PA

Directions to Union Cigar Club can be found here.

This time the whole Wolly Clan drove out to Gettysburg on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Along the way we were reminded of PA's German heritage driving through such towns as East Berlin and by the Hofbrauhaus in Abbottstown. We also noticed a myriad of houses with the Amish Barn Stars adorning the outside of their homes. Instead of going directly to the Union Cigar Club in downtown Gettysburg, we decided to first tour some of the many battlefield monuments. Gettysburg has changed since I was a kid. Growing up in the area, our school took many field trips to the Gettysburg Battlefield. The National Park Service built a large Museum and Visitor Center helping you to explore the vast area of land where these battles took place and to discover the awesome human sacrifice experienced during three days of battle back in 1863. When I was a kid in school I was fortunate to have a tour guide explain and show us where the battles took place and what happened. Today you can pick up a map at the Visitor Center and follow the marked route in your car to experience the battlefield for yourself.

Union Cigar Club Gettysburg, PA

As most of our clan had seen the Gettysburg Battlefield several times we didn't spend the entire day exploring the cemeteries and battlefield sites. We made our way into town and found the Union Cigar Club. Downtown Gettysburg still has a small town charm to it with beautifully maintained historic building. For an unseasonably warm beautiful November Saturday afternoon, this popular tourist town did not have a crowded or lively feeling about it. It seemed to maintain a rather relaxed, small town vibe in my opinion. I guess most of the tourists were outside of town in Battlefields.

The storefront of Union Cigar Club fits well into the theme and feel of the town. Entering the shop you notice immediately that it is one large open room. The cigars and bar are located in the front of the shop and the lounge is located in the back of the shop. A few people were sitting at the bar enjoying their cigars. We were greeted with a warm hello from the fellow behind the bar and also by a beautiful dog named Moose (if my memory serves correct). This was a self service place, but the fellow working tallied the price for you after you finished your selection. Surprisingly, they had the 2008 Number 1 rated cigar of the year by CA (the Casa Magna Colorado Robusto) in their humidor. I was eager to see what all the hype was about so I bought a few for myself and others in the group to give it a try.

Everyone except my sister and I retired to the lounge to relax and enjoy their cigars. My sister tested the knowledge and friendliness of other customers by asking their opinion and recommendation for a cigar to smoke. Everyone was friendly with her helping to decide on a Joya de Nicaragua Puro Celebracion cigar to smoke in the lounge. They do offer sodas, coffee/cappuccinos, hot chocolates and other beverages at the bar. After arranging drinks at the bar and looking into possible cigar box purchases before leaving, I finally settled into the cigar lounge with the rest of the clan.

I took an open seat next to my brother-in-law and sank into a puffy, very comfortable leather couch. Again there was the standard large flat screen TV in the corner, but there was a black screen and only classic rock music could be heard coming out of it. Bonus points in my book. The walls of the lounge were decorated with wonderful framed cigar box top art. It looked as if someone put some time and thought into the lounge. It felt comfortable and had its own style to it, as you see from the photos. On the table in front of us was a cigar box with a small surprise inside. If my brother hadn't opened it first and reacted as he did, with my curiousness I would have been the one opening it making a bigger scene than necessary. I won't spoil the surprise for you. The guys at Union Cigar Club are pranksters and this was refreshing to see. Other customers were sitting nearby also enjoying each other’s company and their cigars.

Everyone in our clan was enjoying themselves. The conversation was constant, light-hearted and I was really enjoying spending time in a cigar lounge with the people I love. Other customers and staff were polite and actually chivalrous to my girlfriend and sisters. The lounge itself was comfortable and there was a nice mixture of personalities in the lounge. The staff was friendly and helpful. And there was a great selection of cigars. What more could you want you ask? I'll tell you....a ventilation system that works. They had a bunch of fans (floor and ceiling) and ventilators in the shop running to try and regulate a comfortable level. But the smoke was so thick that it became unbearable. I was smoking a great cigar, I was enjoying the company of the people I love most in my life in a nice cigar lounge, but none of us could bear the smoke. Even the guys next to us got up and left. It was quite unfortunate. I liked it there otherwise. I bought a few boxes of cigars I hadn't found at other places in the area and rounded up our clan to leave. We were all up for some much needed fresh air. I was only half way through my cigar...unfortunately.

Union Cigar Club Gettysburg, PA

Prices: I found the prices to be comparable to other cigar shops I had visited in the area.

Recommendation: Gentlemen at Union Cigar Club, please install a ventilation system that works. An "A" for effort with all the fans and ventilators running at the time we were there. But all they did was blow the smoke around the shop instead of out of the shop. You've got a really great cigar lounge and cigar shop. But nobody will enjoy it as it really should be enjoyed if they can't breathe. A great cigar selection, a comfortable, rustic cigar lounge and a friendly atmosphere.

Directions to Olde World Tobacco can be found here.

It was a pleasure to visit this cigar lounge in the Heart of Lancaster County and Amish Country. After an afternoon of visiting many, many shops in such towns as Intercourse, Blue Ball, and Bird In Hand (Yes, those really are their names) with my sisters and girlfriend, we stopped at Olde World Tobacco. I was encouraged that Olde World Tobacco boasted a kick-ass coffee bar as well as cigar lounge. I needed some kind of carrot to dangle in front of the ladies after the previous day’s debacle in Hershey. If this place wasn't good, I'd never live my cigar hobby down. If I could show them "my world" hopefully they would understand their brothers hobby (passion really) a little better. With my stomach full on funnel cake, freshly baked soft pretzels, and Swedish red fish purchased at the Bird In Hand Farmers Market (with whoopee pies and shoofly pie sitting in the car for later in the evening), we found Old World Tobacco - Joey's Java House and made our way in. The storefront is a strip mall style (pretty common for PA) and reminded me of the same style storefront in Hershey from the previous day. I was hoping this wouldn't be a déjà vu.

Walking into the shop, first is the Joey's Java House portion of the room on the right, then some chairs for patrons. The chairs were full with patrons enjoying cigars. Then came the cigar humidors lining the walls. I was met by Rocco Steco who offered his assistance. First things first, coffee for the ladies. He directed the ladies to seats in the lounge and sent a waitress to take their order. Excellent start...phew! With the ladies taken care of, long story short, I explained I was visiting from Germany and had a list of cigars I was looking for. Boom! Rocco went to work right away collecting what he had compared to the list I had. During the process, one of my sisters came out surprisingly wanting to try a cigar. Rocco offered his assistance in recommending a cigar to her liking. I also had a couple requests for cigars from friends back in Germany which he was very helpful with. He apologized for not having some of the cigars on my list, but they were new releases and sold out quickly. He was waiting on a new shipment. But they did have a few good ones that I was looking for. My lot collected and put to the side to be paid for later, I contently made my way back to the cigar lounge where the ladies were waiting.

First impression of the cigar lounge was positive because 1.) I could actually see as it was not dark and 2.) the furniture was in great condition. Of course there was a large screen TV in the corner with sports playing. This seems to be the norm in American cigar lounges. In Europe it is not. I prefer not having a TV. TV tends to distract and suck people into it. Without a TV, people tend to talk with one another. I find this more interesting. I can't fault the cigar lounge though as this is the norm in America and it's what the people want. First showing my sister how to clip and light her cigar, I clipped and lit mine. My sister had an Oliva NUb Connecticut and I chose a La Gloria Cubana Artesanos de Miami to smoke. At the same time Rocco showed up with my coffee. The freshly roasted coffee was a refreshing change from the weak American coffee I was drinking in the previous few days. I admit I've become pretty spoiled with the coffee over here in Europe. Coffee good...cigar good...are the ladies enjoying themselves? As my other sister and girlfriend had experienced Hershey with me the day before, I was concerned about their opinion. They were enjoying their coffee and felt MUCH more at ease in Olde World Tobacco compared to Hershey. I felt better also because I knew this is how it should be.

The cigar lounge itself was clean, comfortable and lively with conversation from patrons filling up the lounge for a Friday after work smoke. It was sort of like a happy hour for cigars before heading home for the evening...kinda cool. We enjoyed ourselves over the next hour with laughs and good conversation. The waitress checked on us from time to time to see if we needed assistance. If you go there alone I noticed a large rack of cigar magazines to read while enjoying your cigar. I couldn't have been happier with the quality of service from the staff and the lounge itself.

Prices: I had to compare prices online as I don't have the luxury of checking ALL of the local cigar stores since I do live in Germany. Most cigars are cheaper to buy online, but I found that most of the cigars I bought were sold under retail value. So I would say the prices are reasonable at Olde World Tobacco. I also found the coffee/cappuccino to be a fair price.

Recommendation: Venture out to the heart of Lancaster County and visit this cigar lounge! They boast the largest selection of cigars in central PA and roast their own coffee in-house. The lounge itself is warm and relaxing and the service is top notch. If I still lived in central PA I would definitely visit Olde World Tobacco often for my "man pampering" time. They will also ship cigars by mail. Contact information is above. Thanks Rocco for a great time and showing my family a positive and enjoyable cigar experience.

I stopped by a total of four cigar lounges during my visit to Central PA. I'll do a full review of two of them shortly. As for the other two, I want to give an honorable mention to one and a WTF! to another. Let me explain...

J. Thomas O'Malley Tobacconist

The very first cigar lounge was visited before we even reached our final destination. We reached Central PA a couple hours earlier than expected. As we were staying with family, nobody was home because we were expected later. What's a great way to pass some time? You guessed it, after an eight and a half hour flight and three and a half hours in a car, we decided to give J. Thomas O'Malley Tobacconist (I love the name) a try. It is actually connected to the pool room of Coakley's Restaurant and Irish Pub. located at 305 Bridge Street, New Cumberland, PA 17070. It is also accessible through a very cool, old, speakeasy style front door on Bridge Street. It boasts a beautiful hand-crafted wooden bar with a nice selection of high end whiskies, cognacs, and brandy and also cocktails, wine and beer. There is a humidor cabinet standing next to the bar containing a small but well selected choice of cigars such as Padrón, Arturo Fuente, Oliva, and Rocky Patel. The staff was friendly and very helpful with any questions or assistance we required.

We purchased our cigars and settled into some comfortable chairs at the end of the room with our beers. I enjoyed a spicy Padrón Robusto Maduro ($5) and my smoking partner-in-crime enjoyed an Oliva G Special G ($4). We passed the time catching up on American football on the large flat screen TV in front of us, enjoying a Yuengling beer after a long hiatus, enjoying each other’s company and the atmosphere smoking our cigars.

     J. Thomas O'Malley Tobacconist recently opened in September of this year. It is a small place with great potential. Currently it's mostly used by patrons from Coakley's to smoke cigarettes as it is not allowed in Coakley's due to the stringent PA Anti-Smoking laws. We were the only ones smoking cigars during our visit. To be fair it was late afternoon on a Wednesday. I asked if they get a lot of cigar smokers in. The answer was later in the evening. They open to smoke at 1100 (accessible through Coakley's pool room, grab your drinks at Coakley’s bar on the way into the cigar lounge) but the bar and front door opens at 1600. If you are in the area, stop by and light up a cigar. It doesn't have to be purchased there either. You can bring your own cigars to smoke. It really is a friendly, relaxing atmosphere. Sorry I have no pictures, but the camera was buried in the bottom of my luggage. After 12 hours of travel, I had no desire to dig it out. This cigar lounge deserves honorable mention. If I still lived in the area, I would go here often.

Tobacco Company (Hershey)

Now... to the WTF! cigar lounge visited the next day. Hershey, PA home of Hershey Chocolate and the world’s largest chocolate factory was our destination. I spent the afternoon with my girlfriend, sister and mom touring Chocolate World and Hershey itself on the Trolley Works tour. Pretty cool stuff if you get the chance. After eating a late lunch we stopped at the Tobacco Company (located at 239 Chocolate Avenue, Hershey, PA 17033) for a cigar before heading home. I was surprised and thankful my mom and sister would go in the cigar lounge as neither one of them smoke. But they were curious and wanted to see what the cigar lounge thing was all about.

First impression upon entering the store was positive. On both sides along the walls were large cabinet humidors extending the length of the walls filled with a large selection of cigars. There were also a couple chairs in the middle of the room occupied by guys smoking cigars and other customers looking for cigars to purchase. I politely told the ladies to make themselves comfortable in the back room where the cigar lounge is located as I would be awhile. I brought a long list of new cigar releases and other cigars I couldn't find in Europe and would take some time to sort through the large selection there. Turns out they didn't have a lot of what I wanted. But so did neither of the other cigar lounges I visited in the next couple days. Seems most places sold out of the new release and are waiting for new shipments. The ladies retired to the back cigar lounge and I went hunting for cigars on my list. I asked the gentleman behind the counter if I grabbed the cigars myself or if he did that. He pointed me towards some small baskets and said to collect them myself and to let him know the price when you pay for them. Collecting them myself I don't mind. The latter part, telling him the prices, was the beginning of the end. I picked up the business card on the counter as I walked away to make my cigar selections. I found it odd that on the business card it says plain as day "Full Service Tobacconist" and here I am, the customer, collecting my own cigars and later running around yelling the prices at the cashier as he rang up my purchase. I decided on a Cabaiguan Robusto to smoke and asked for a cutter and light. The cashier pointed to a cutter on the countertop and said to use any lighter around. I had never seen a cigar cutter chained to the countertop like a pen is at a bank...until then. As the cashier walked to the backroom cigar lounge I cut the head and lit the foot with a lighter on display for sale. To the back cigar lounge I ventured.

The ladies didn't venture far into the lounge as I found them seated right by the door. They seemed engrossed in watching the end of "Pearl Harbor" playing on a very large flat screen TV. Other seats were occupied so I sat farther away from them and sat contently concentrating on my first ever Cabaiguan. The cigar was quite good. It was pretty dark in the lounge but at first glance it seemed like your typical cigar lounge. Cigar lockers for members, a poker table, couch and chairs, etc... Then my eyes adjusted to the darkness. First thing I noticed was the look on my girlfriends face...the look saying something wasn't right. Long story short, none of the ladies felt comfortable there. After my girlfriend pointed a few things out to me I took a closer look at my surroundings. The cashier now sitting in the lounge with us was only wearing socks, no shoes. A customer came to the back room to pay for cigars, because the cashier was too busy with something on his laptop. The other guys in the lounge were drinking soda out of large Styrofoam cups they purchased at the nearby pizza joint. They had a soda machine in the lounge but everything was sold out. None of the guys were talking amongst each other. I noticed the chair my mom was sitting in was coming apart. I began to get the feeling I was sitting in some guy’s basement hanging out with guys pouting because there were girls there. The only thing missing was a porno playing on the TV. I didn't have a good feeling (I actually had a seedy feeling) and told the ladies I saw all I needed to see. We left before I even finished half of my cigar. I apologized to them several times on the way home.

If you are looking to buy cigars and don't mind self-service, then this is the place for you as they do have a good selection. But as far as customer service and smoking a cigar on-site....this "Full Service Tobacconist" needs a lot of work. I won't go back.
